GRAND TERRACE, Calif. (KTLA) — A family has been forced to leave their home after a 20-foot wide section of hillside gave way under the home’s rear deck Tuesday.

The homeowner, Dr. Arthur Jimenez, told KTLA he was getting ready for work when he heard a big bang.

Jimenez said he checked the entire house, except the patio, and found no damage.

Fire officials showed up at his door a few minutes later and told Jimenez he needed to get out of the house as soon as possible.

He and his wife safely left the home and waited for answers.

Jimenez said he was told there were damaged water pipes beneath his home at 22846 Vista Grande, causing it to give way.

“The scariest part is right now it’s just the patio, but we don’t know the extent of the damage,” Jimenez said.

The Riverside Press Enterprise reported the house was red-tagged – condemned for occupation – after firefighters found a half-inch crack through the foundation.
