Family and friends spoke out Monday night about one of the victims of a violent rampage in Isla Vista, the same day her Westlake Village high school held a memorial.

Many said they had known 19-year-old Veronika Weiss, who attended Westlake High School before going to UC Santa Barbara, for years, and that they were still in shock.

“We’re really shocked,” said Amanda McNutt, Weiss’s former coach. “She touched a lot of people. And for someone who’s 19-years-old to have that many people showing up, that’s a lot to say.”

Loved ones kept the focus of the memorial on Weiss’s life, describing her as a beautiful young woman who was kind to others.

“There’s been kids who say, ‘oh, I was a new kid in school and she came up to me and just started talking to me, I didn’t even know her.’ So, she was just that type of person.”
