One man was killed and another was injured Monday in a shooting in Maywood, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said.

Officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 5900 block of Flora Avenue around 3:35 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The person who called authorities said they heard several shots and observed one victim down on the ground.

Deputies who arrived at the scene found paramedics already tending to one of the victims, who had been shot at least once in the upper torso. That man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

A short time later, officials were advised of a second gunshot victim who was at a local hospital. That man had been shot multiple times in the upper torso, but he was in stable condition and expected to survive, according to investigators.

Authorities did not identify the victims, other than to say they are both Latino men.

Aerial footage from Sky 5 showed deputies hanging police tape to block off an area of the street where the shooting was reported.

Sheriff’s detectives were continuing to investigate the incident late Monday night.

No further information was available.
