A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man armed with a homemade spear Saturday afternoon at a home in Maywood, authorities said.

Deputies responded about 2:30 p.m. to domestic disturbance call in the 5200 block of Corona Avenue, where relatives of the suspect said he was inside residence, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in news release.

The deputies entered the home and “made contact with the suspect at his bedroom door,” the statement said, adding that the man was in possession of the spear.

In an unsuccessful attempt to disarm him, the deputies applied less-than-lethal force, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The man lunged at the deputies, one of whom fired his service weapon, the news release said. The suspect was struck several times in the upper torso. His name was not immediately disclosed.

He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, sheriff’s officials said. None of the deputies were injured.
