A woman died and another woman was injured in a broad-daylight shooting in South Los Angeles on Monday, officials said.

The gunfire was reported just after noon at Broadway and 88th Street, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez said.

Officers found a woman lying at the southeast corner of the intersection suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Lt. Byron Roberts of the LAPD's South Bureau Homicide Division said. Paramedics took her to a hospital.

"Life-saving measures were attempted. Unfortunately, she did pass as a result of the gunshot wound she sustained at this location," Roberts said.

"An additional person with victim. She was also struck by a gunshot," Roberts said. "That was a graze wound. She is in good condition."

Both victims were described as Latina women in their 40s, police said. The identity of the woman killed in the shooting was not released pending family notification.

Police initially said it was believed two men in a passing car fired the gunshots. But Roberts later said the shooter was believed to be a lone man who fled the scene in a vehicle after the shooting.

Detailed descriptions of the shooter or the car were not available.

The victims were not believed to be gang members, but based on the circumstances of the shooting, Roberts suspected the attackers were.

Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and sought video footage of the shooting Monday afternoon, Robert said.

Anyone with information can reach the LAPD's South Bureau Homicide Division  at 323-786-5100. Tips may also be submitted anonymously to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
