A 12-year-old boy was critically injured and a second person was hospitalized in unknown condition following hit-and-run crash involving a minivan and an SUV in El Monte, officials said Sunday.

A Toyota Sienna and a Chevy Suburban collided about 9:30 p.m. Saturday at Garvey and Lexington avenues, according to El Monte Police Department and Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

The child, who was initially believed to have been thrown from the Toyota, was taken to a hospital in critical condition, El Monte police said. A second patient was also treated and was believed to be in stable condition on Sunday.

The driver of the Chevy fled from his or her car and ran, police said. No description was available. That person remained outstanding as of early Sunday.

Police asked the public to avoid the area during the investigation Saturday night.
