A teenage boy was fatally shot in Harbor City on Monday evening, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The shooting occurred in the 1500 block of West Anaheim Street around 6 p.m. The teen collapsed on the sidewalk outside of the apartment complex where he lived after being shot, police said.

He was shot at least once and multiple shell casings were found at the scene, according to authorities.

"This is a young person that was a victim of a violent crime," said Capt. Gisselle Espinosa with the LAPD. "We should come together as a community, with the police as well as the media, to try and identify who the suspects are. We can put some closure to it and do some service to the family."

The boy was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Authorities initially indicated the boy was 14 years old, but later stated his exact age was unknown.

One witness told KTLA he heard the family of the victim screaming and crying at the scene.

"The way they were screaming--the mom, the sisters, the friends--they were crying," said Javier Sanchez, a resident. "It was sad. The mom was in the middle of the street; she didn't care if cars were coming."

Authorities believe the shooting may have been gang related. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department at 310-726-7701.
