An alleged hit-and-run driver was arrested Wednesday morning after a collision in Riverside that left a 14-year-old girl hospitalized, police said.
Officers responded to the intersection of La Sierra Avenue and Cochran Street around 7:15 a.m. after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a car, which fled the scene, according to a Riverside Police Department news release.
The girl, who was critically injured in the crash, was transported to Loma Linda Hospital. She was last reported to be in stable condition, the release stated.
The collision occurred a short distance away from La Sierra High School, though police did not say whether the victim was a student there.
Witnesses told police that the teen was in the crosswalk at La Sierra when she was hit by a car making a left turn from Cochran. The driver briefly stopped, but then left the scene before first responders arrived, according to investigators.
An officer located the alleged hit-and-run vehicle at State Route 91 and La Sierra Avenue and conducted a traffic stop. Several witnesses positively identified the driver, which resulted in the arrest of a 42-year-old Riverside resident, police said.
Authorities have not released the person’s name.
The incident is under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to call Detective Ken Madsen at 951-826-8723.
