A California juvenile court judge has found a 15-year-old boy who stabbed his mother to death guilty of voluntary manslaughter.

Judge Douglas J. Hatchimonji did not publicly state Wednesday why he believed Ike Souzer committed manslaughter and not murder.

Souzer has been in custody since he was 13, when he was arrested for stabbing 48-year-old Barbra Scheuer-Souzer in Garden Grove.

Souzer’s attorney, David Hammond, told the Orange County Register there was “clear evidence” that the boy acted in self-defense after years of abuse by his mother.

Souzer made headlines in April after escaping from juvenile hall during the trial and spending nearly a day on the loose before being found at a McDonald’s.

He faces up to an 11-year sentence for the manslaughter charge.
