Two twelve-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl were shot in South L.A., and the gunman remained at large Thursday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The young victims were shot in the 500 block of West 97th Street and officers responded to the scene around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, LAPD officials said. They were still being hospitalized the following morning but police said their conditions are not known.

Investigators believe a man drove up to the kids and fired before fleeing the scene.

No suspect description or details about a vehicle possibly involved have been released while the motive remains under investigation.

One woman said she believes one of the children hid in her backyard.

Local residents told KTLA there's a park in the neighborhood that kids usually play at, particularly during this time of year since school's out for summer. Some parents said they feared letting their children out again.

It's unclear whether the incident may have been gang-related, authorities said. No other details have been released.

KTLA's Alberto Mendez contributed to this report.
