A 2-year-old girl was killed and a suspected drunk driver suffered major injuries Friday evening when their vehicle overturned on a road near Pepperdine University in Malibu, authorities said.

The single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. as 22-year-old Magdalena Lisi was driving north on Malibu Canyon Road, just north of Potter Road, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.

The 2011 Kia was traveling at an unknown speed when it drifted to the right and struck a metal guardrail. The driver turned the steering wheel to the left in an effort to regain control of the vehicle, which then crossed the northbound and southbound lanes, struck a hillside and rolled over, the news release said.

Firefighter-paramedics responded to the scene, where the toddler in the backseat of the Kia was pronounced dead, the CHP said. Her name was not immediately released, pending notification of family.

Lisi was airlifted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and later arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to the Highway Patrol. She remained hospitalized early Saturday morning.

The driver and the girl, both residents of Canoga Park, were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident, authorities said. Their relationship was unclear.

Anyone with information about the crash was encouraged to call Officer Bentley of the CHP’s West Valley Office at 818-888-0980.
