Power was restored to some 2,500 LADWP customers who had gone without electricity in the Sherman Oaks and Studio City areas Thursday, a day after equipment failed, causing power to be initially knocked out for some 8,700 residents.

Crews suspect a “feeder regulator” failed, causing oil and other materials to spray throughout the South Feeder Room Wednesday night, prompting the outage for some 8,700 customers, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said around 6 a.m. Thursday of an initial assessment.

The hazardous conditions slowed crews’ efforts, but more than half the affected customers had power by 9 a.m. Thursday and full restoration was expected by the end of the day.

By about 5:45 p.m., DWP said all power was restored.

The Los Angeles Fire Department initially declared the area — located at LADWP Electric Distribution Station 49 — a “no entry” zone, but crews were later allowed to enter the affected area with full hazardous materials suits.
