5 Injured in Crash at Major Intersection in Koreatown

A violent crash at a busy thoroughfare in Koreatown left five people injured early Friday, officials said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department first reported the incident at the intersection of Beverly Boulevard and Western Avenue at around 5:30 a.m.

The driver of a BMW heading west on Beverly Boulevard ran a red light and struck an Acura at Western Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The Acura driver, who did not have any passengers, was heading north, LAPD said.

The BMW had four occupants, police said.

Crews had to extricate the vehicles' occupants from the wreckage before they could be taken to the hospital, according to the Fire Department.

Two people were in critical condition, two in serious condition and one in fair condition, LAFD. Police did not have an update on the condition of the victims as of 10:20 a.m.

Authorities said motorists should expect added congestion in the area.
