The collision occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp, according to Sgt. David Casarez with the Costa Mesa Police Department.

The driver, identified as Anaheim resident Brandon Anthony Alvarez, was driving northbound on Harbor Boulevard when he allegedly ran a red light and collided with the victim’s Kia Optima as it was getting off the freeway, a Costa Mesa police watch commander said.

The female driver was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, Casarez said. She was later identified by Orange County coroner’s officials as Marcela Pacheco Garciaguirre, 23, of Irvine.

A male passenger in the woman’s vehicle suffered moderate injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

Prior to that collision, Alvarez allegedly struck another vehicle near the intersection of Harbor Boulevard and Date Place, the watch commander said.

The driver pulled into a nearby parking lot and called police. It was not immediately clear if he was injured.

Alvarez has been arrested and booked on suspicion of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, according to police. He was released Sunday afternoon on $100,000 bail.
