An alleged DUI driver has been arrested after a collision in Garden Grove that left a woman and her dog dead, police said Wednesday morning.

A woman was riding an adult-sized tricycle with her dog in an attached basket near the intersection of Chapman and Faye avenues at about 9:45 p.m. on Tuesday when she was struck by a pickup truck, according to a news release from the Garden Grove Police Department.

The force of the collision knocked the tricycle down and sent the basket with the dog still inside a short distance away, police officials said in the release.

The unidentified woman, said to be in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her dog was transported by Orange County Animal Services to an area animal hospital where it later died.

The driver of the pickup truck, identified by police as Rita Faye McLaughlin, remained at the crash site and waited for authorities to arrive, police said.

McLaughlin allegedly showed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time, the release stated.

She was later arrested at the scene following a field sobriety test.

McLaughlin, a resident of Santa Ana, was expected to be booked at Orange County Jail on a felony DUI charge, police officials said in the release.

An investigation into the fatal crash was ongoing.

Garden Grove police are requesting the public’s help, and anyone who possibly witnessed the collision has been asked to call the department at 714-741-5800.
