SAN DIEGO (KTLA) — A nationwide Amber Alert was in its second full day on Wednesday for a man suspected of killing a woman and possibly her young son, and then abducting her teenage daughter.

Authorities were looking for 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and her 8-year-old brother Ethan.

James Lee DiMaggio, left, and siblings Ethan, 8, and Hannah Anderson, 16.

The suspect has been identified as 40-year-old James DiMaggio, who was also suspected of killing the children’s mother, Christina Anderson.

DiMaggio was apparently a longtime family friend, and investigators said he had a close platonic relationship with the mother.

Authorities discovered Christina Anderson’s body on Sunday night in a burned-out garage at DiMaggio’s home in Boulevard, east of San Diego.

They also said they found the remains of a young child in the rubble, but stopped short of identifying the body as that of Ethan Anderson.

The remains were consistent with those of an 8-year-old child, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Officials said it would take several days to get the results of DNA testing.

The children’s father, Brett Anderson, made an emotional plea on Tuesday for the safe return of his daughter Hannah. He did not make reference to his son.

“Jim, I can’t fathom what you are thinking. The damage is done,” he said. “I’m begging you to let my daughter go, you’ve taken everything else.”

“Hannah, we all love you very much. If you have a chance take it, you run, you will be found,” he also said.

Brett Anderson was Christina Anderson’s current husband, but authorities did not elaborate on the nature of their relationship beyond saying that he lived out of state.

DiMaggio was believed to be driving a blue, four-door Nissan Versa, with the California license plate No. 6WCU986.

But authorities said DiMaggio might have switched vehicles or may have taken public transportation.

“We don’t have any clear direction of where they’re going,” San Diego County sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.

“It would be logical for us to assume that he would head towards Mexico… we’re very close to the border,” Giannantonio said.

He also said that DiMaggio might have tried to head the opposite direction toward Canada, thinking that the authorities there might not be looking for him.

Hannah Anderson is about 5 feet 7 inches tall and 115 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes.

Her brother Ethan has sandy blond hair and is about 4 feet 11 inches tall and 65 pounds.

Anyone who sees DiMaggio or the children should call 911. Anyone with information was asked to call the San Diego Sheriff’s Department at (858) 565-5200.
