An armed man was taken into custody after a hostage situation at an apartment in the Westlake District of Los Angeles Sunday night that prompted a SWAT team response, authorities said.

Officers initially responded to the 200 block of Carondelet Street shortly after 7 p.m. to a report of a man with a gun, according to Lt. Craig Heredia of the LAPD’s Rampart Division.

When they arrived, they determined that the man was connected to an assault with a deadly weapon that had occurred, the Los Angeles Police Department lieutenant said.

The man then ran into an apartment on the street.

Officers believed that there was at least one hostage inside the residence, according to Heredia.

A SWAT team responded to the scene and a containment area was set up.

Shortly before 9:45 p.m., the man was taken into custody without incident, according to LAPD. It was unclear how many people were inside the apartment with the man, but police stated that no hostages were injured.

The man’s name was not released.

No further information was immediately available.
