The events began with a car crash on Downey Avenue just north Jefferson Street in Paramount at about 3 a.m. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Dep. Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

A stranger stopped to help a man involved in the crash, but the man attacked the good Samaritan and stole their Chrysler PT Cruiser, Navarro-Suarez said.

The victim was injured in the attack and taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

A short time later, the stolen vehicle was involved in crash in the 17600 block of Downey Avenue, Navarro-Suarez said.

A witness said a man wearing boxers ran from the crash and tried to climb onto a passing truck, but eventfully jumped off and headed toward a home.

The man then forced his way into the home by breaking a window, Navarro-Suarez said.

A woman who was inside at the time managed to lock herself in a bedroom and call 911 before escaping through a window, Navarro-Suarez said.

A SWAT team attempted to make contact with the man, who was believed to be armed, in hopes of getting him to surrender peacefully, Navarro-Suarez said.

Officers eventually made their way inside the home and found the man dead, a Sheriff's Department deputy at the scene said.

No weapons were found inside the home.

Neighboring homes were evacuated during the incident.
