A woman is in custody after authorities went in pursuit of a vehicle along the northbound 5 Freeway in the Castaic area Tuesday night.

California Highway Patrol officials took over the chase after CSU Long Beach police began pursuing the vehicle around 10:20 p.m. for allegedly not having headlights on, authorities said. The pursuit then extended into a stretch of the northbound 405 Freeway in West L.A.

An hour later, Sky5 was overhead as the vehicle was still fleeing from officers on the 5 Freeway after traveling along the 405 earlier. Sky5 was unable to continue tracking the chase at that time due to poor visibility.

The chopper was overhead as the sedan fled from officers along an empty stretch of the northbound 405 Freeway approaching the Mulholland Drive exit about 10:45 p.m.

A CHP vehicle tailing the pursuit suspect appeared to be speeding up to pass the car but then slowed down at 10:53 p.m.

Minutes later, at 11:08 p.m., the fleeing vehicle had moved onto the 5 Freeway in the Santa Clarita area and was approaching Magic Mountain Parkway.

Three minutes later, the car was traveling into heavier traffic and was driving along the left shoulder of the freeway, nearly hitting construction cones. The car appeared to be driving within construction areas closed off to traffic.

It later moved further north into the Castaic area before Sky5 was unable to continue following due to poor visibility creating unsafe flying conditions.

The driver was finally taken into custody about 11:30 p.m. on the northbound 5 Freeway just north of The Islands, the CHP confirmed.

Animal control was called to pick up a dog that was found in the vehicle.
