A man who was shot by police in South Pasadena after barricading himself in a home Sunday morning was later arrested for burglary, officials reported.

The incident was reported about 4:25 a.m. in the 1300 block of Huntington Drive when a 48-year-old woman, and her 22-year-old daughter, were heard screaming and asking for help after they found an intruder inside their home, sheriff’s officials said. The women locked themselves in an upstairs bathroom.

The suspect, a 48-year-old man,  tried to break through the bathroom door, but was unable to get in so moved on to ransack the first floor of the home, authorities reported.

Deputies responded to the mother’s 911 call and found the suspect downstairs and an officer-involved shooting occurred, officials said. The suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom, meanwhile officers used a ladder to rescue the mother and daughter from a window inside a bathroom where they were hiding.

The suspect eventually surrendered to authorities and was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the shoulder.

It is unclear why the man was in the home, his relationship with the residents and what led up to the shooting.

Authorities initially reported that the man was armed, but that remains under investigation.

The suspect was booked for burglary, the sheriff’s department reported.

The South Pasadena Police Department responded, as well as the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau and the Alhambra Police Department.

The mother and daughter were unharmed, and no officers were injured, officials said.

The incident and the shooting will be investigated by the Sheriff’s Department.
