Three dogs were believed to have been killed by bees at a home in Santa Ana on Wednesday, according to police.
The police Animal Services Section was called to a home in the 2200 block of North Olive Street (map) about 3 p.m. with a report that three dogs were dead and might have been killed by bees, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department said.
Responding officers found three dead Australian shepherds at the home, according to Bertagna.
“It is heartbreaking,” said dog owner Linnea Chapman.
Bees were coming from the property next door, and officers searched and found a large hive inside a shed on the property.
The dog were barking at a pool cleaner next door and that was apparently enough to upset the bees, according to Sonia Berg with Santa Ana Animal control.
A private bee specialist — Bee Busters, according to a photo from the scene — was called to remove the hive, Bertagna said.
Photos taken by Animal Services officers showed hundreds of bees on a shelf or cabinet, as well as buckets filled with honeycomb.
