A man was found dead on the beach in the Venice area near Marina del Rey Monday and Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives were investigating.

Los Angeles County lifeguards responded to 5000 Ocean Front Walk (map) about 1:44 p.m. after a bystander called 911.

When they got there, they found an 6-to-8-foot inflatable vessel beached and an unresponsive adult male, according to tweets from the county Fire Department’s Lifeguard Division.

Life-saving efforts were made, but the man was pronounced dead on scene by city Fire Department paramedics.

The report first came in as a male body floating in the water, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Amore Smith told the Los Angeles Times.

Homicide detectives were sent to the scene for a death investigation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputy Amber Smith said she could not confirm if the incident was a drowning.

A portion of the beach near Ocean Front Walk and Topsail Street was coroner off.
