In an emotional reunion early Sunday morning in Los Angeles, several high school students were greeted by loved ones after returning from an ill-fated trip to Humboldt State University in Northern California.
The students had been on one of two buses that arrived safely Thursday at the campus in Arcata, as part of a two-day tour of the school.
A third bus was struck head-on by a FedEx truck on the 5 Freeway, about 100 miles north of Sacramento, in a fiery crash that killed five students, three chaperones and both drivers.
The high schoolers who arrived at Union Station about 12:45 a.m. Sunday were embraced by relieved parents and other relatives, many of whom were visibly emotional.
“I’m so grateful that my daughter is back, is safe,” said one woman. “She was supposed to be on the second bus, the one that had the crash. But I’m so blessed that she’s back home.”
