Dresses that belonged to Marilyn Monroe… a gun that Captain Kirk held in Star Trek… the bottle from “I Dream of Jeannie”… and Leo and Brad’s early audition tapes!

Some of these pieces of pop culture history could have been yours for the right price at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills.

But Hollywood wouldn’t be Hollywood without a little drama, right? You see, SAG-AFTRA, the performers’ union, cried foul.

A statement reads: “SAG-AFTRA considers the right of performers to control the use of their image to be of utmost importance and we vigorously protect those rights.”

The union goes on to say, quote, “Auditions are not public performances, and under SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreements performers are entitled to expect them to remain private.”

The union asked Julien’s to stop selling the rare footage and Julien’s agreed.

“Some of the actors who auditioned actually got a kick out of this and thought it was pretty funny that there’s any value to these tapes,” says Darren Julien, President and CEO of Julien’s Auctions.

“However, SAG expressed some concerns, and out of respect to them, and the actors who were against the sale of these tapes, we decided, along with the casting directors, to remove them from the marketplace.

“It’s new territory, the selling of audition tapes. It’s never been done before and probably never will be again, at least by our company.”

Casting directors had provided more than 50 audition tapes for sale, with suggested values of up to $4,000.

So, we’ll continue to see gowns, daredevil jumpsuits, jewelry, guns and genie bottles up for auction and in spectacular Hollywood collections.

But don’t expect to see your favorite mega-movie stars when they had to compete to wow casting directors on home video, in tiny, cramped offices.
