A chase that began in San Bernardino ended in Montebello Wednesday evening, after the driver of a stolen vehicle led authorities on a high-speed pursuit for more than an hour.
The driver, a female, is believed to have stolen the vehicle in El Monte. She was clocked at speeds of more than 100 mph while on several SoCal freeways before exiting the westbound 60 Freeway at Atlantic Boulevard and taking surface streets into the East Los Angeles area with several CHP units in chase.
At one point, she entered the parking lot of a Target, driving at high speeds in the narrow rows of cars, nearly colliding with a vehicle near the exit.
Just after 8 p.m., the vehicle came to a stop in a residential neighborhood in Monterey Park near the intersection of Fulton Avenue and Fernfield Drive.
Video from Sky5 showed a man in the road waving down the fleeing driver just prior to them stopping. It’s unclear what, if any, relationship that man has with the driver.
Several CHP vehicles pulled up behind the vehicle and ordered the driver to surrender. After several tense minutes with no response, she appeared to be ready to surrender, but suddenly took off again.
Much of the pursuit after that initial stop has taken place on surface streets in Monterey Park, with the driver taking several of the same streets as he evaded law enforcement.
After running over a spike strip near a gas station, the vehicle ended up losing its front driver-side tire in Montebello just south of the 60 Freeway at the intersection of Via San Clemente and N. Garfield Avenue.
Officers surrounded the disabled vehicle, urging the woman to surrender, but she refused to comply. That led to officers deploying pepper balls into the vehicle through a side window.
After the vehicle filled up with the irritant, the woman surrendered to law enforcement without incident.
