The shooting occurred around 10:25 p.m. Sunday in the 5100 block of Figueroa Street (map), according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Two men in their 20s entered the store and shot the clerk as he tried to escape, police said.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to police. He underwent surgery at an area hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified Monday afternoon as 38-year-old Gonzalo Perez.

He was shot after one of the robbers jumped over the counter and pulled out a handgun, demanding cash from the register, according to police. When Perez walked away, the gunman fired on him.

The two robbers were described as black males between the ages of 25 and 30. No vehicle was seen, police said.

It was the second 7-Eleven in the area targeted by thieves on Sunday night, police said.

About an hour before the Figueroa Street robbery and shooting, a 7-Eleven was robbed 3 miles away in Lincoln Heights.

No one was injured in that incident, police said. Investigators were trying to determine if the two incidents were related.

Police planned to review surveillance video from both locations to help them track down the gunmen.
