They had known each other for just about three weeks before two strangers who met in Hawaii took the first steps together in their on-foot journey across the United States, raising awareness for marine environmental concerns.
Starting in Jacksonville, Florida, in March, the pair -- now a couple -- arrived in Huntington Beach Friday.
Keith Edwards got down on one knee before his partner-in-adventure of seven months, Reina Emerson.
Cheers erupted from the beachside group of their friends and family, plus a few fans.
“Will you … walk the entire West Coast of this country with me?” Edwards asked.
Emerson — and it’s unclear if she was in on the surprise — responded with an enthusiastic “Yes, yes!”
The couple embraced.
Their cross-country journey was started to raise money for the Oahu chapter of the environmental nonprofit the Surfrider Foundation, and to bring awareness to ocean pollution. They documented their 200-plus days of travel on Instagram and Facebook, posting videos and photos regularly.
They encountered skunks, coyotes, dust storms and downpours. Their cart, which they named “Larry,” required many tire changes.
Multiple pairs of shoes were replaced.
“We tried to plan the route and everything, but it changes so much. So many things happened,” Edwards said. “You’ve got to get to a town and talk to the locals and figure out how to get to the next town.”
As they got to Huntington Beach, Edwards appeared to tear up in his final social media video.
"It's extremely emotional right now," he said. "Thanks, everybody."
The pair raised a little over $4,200, according to their GoFundMe page, which was created in late February.
