A traffic collision near a school in Simi Valley left a crossing guard dead on Tuesday, authorities said.

The victim, a 62-year-old Simi Valley woman, was standing on the corner when a three-vehicle crash occurred just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of Los Angeles and Socrates avenues, said Simi Valley Police Sgt. Steve Shorts.

The crash site is a block south of Arroyo Elementary School.

The crossing guard was struck by a blue, 2013 Chevy Cruze as she stood on the northwest corner of the intersection, Shorts said.

She was taken to a nearby trauma center for treatment, but two hours later authorities were notified that she had died, according to the sergeant.

The victim was not being identified, pending the notification of her next of kin.

However, Shorts said the woman had "several years of experience with the city."

"The crossing guard is a city of Simi Valley employee and has been for several years," he told KTLA. "This is not her normal intersection; my understanding is she was covering for another crossing guard."

Police urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation continued.

Officials provided no further information.
