The location of the crash was situated between two schools, Monterey Park Christian School and Meher Montessori School (map).

The identity of the crossing guard was being withheld, but those who lived nearby described him as a wonderful man who had worked in the neighborhood for years.

The driver of the car was identified as a 19-year-old man who was traveling with his mother, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was being interviewed by officers and was said to be cooperating with the investigation.
