A 57-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a chain-reaction crash she allegedly caused killed a man and injured another on the westbound 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park early Wednesday, authorities said.
After her arrest, Ana Guillen, of West Covina, was admitted to the Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center for a mental health evaluation, the California Highway Patrol said.
Investigators believe she was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, but they did not disclose any further details about her condition.
According to the agency, Guillen either came to a stop or was driving slowly on the highway in a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe on the No.5 lane near Francisquito Avenue when an oncoming vehicle sideswiped her.
That car, a 1993 Nissan pickup, hit the rear left of the Hyundai and spun out of control, CHP said. The Nissan came to rest across the middle lanes, facing north.
Investigators believe that's when an oncoming Honda Accord struck the right, front side of the pickup truck. It's unclear whether the driver of the truck, a man only identified as a 55-year old Montclair resident, was inside or outside his vehicle.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda had tried to avoid the pickup, according to CHP. That person, 37-year-old Luis Uribe, of Covina, fractured his back and was taken to the Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina.
Authorities issued a SigAlert near Baldwin Park Boulevard soon after the collision. The freeway wasn't fully reopened until just before 7 a.m.
Officials provided no further information about the incident.
