Authorities responded to reports of a possible drunken man on the second floor of the strip mall on the 5600 block of Rosemead Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m., Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said in a news release. When the deputy attempted to detain the man, an altercation ensued that led to both men falling down the stairs, according to the department. Aerial video from the scene showed the injured deputy lay motionless at the bottom of a flight of stairs just after 6 p.m. The deputy appeared conscious as he was loaded into an ambulance. He was then transported to the Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center in Boyle Heights, where he was wheeled inside on a stretcher. The stretcher was in an upright position, but the deputy was outfitted with a breathing device, aerial footage showed. Sheriff’s officials said he was being evaluated by medical staff and the extent of his head injury was not yet known. The suspect had been taken into custody by other deputies who responded. He was also taken to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, authorities said. KTLA’s Nidia Becerra contributed to this report.
