Phoenix was chained in some bushes at a park in Compton with multiple cuts and chunks of missing skin all over his body when he was discovered Memorial Day weekend.

"The condition was horrible when he came in," said Samir Sargious, a veterinarian at Colima Animal Hospital in Rowland Heights.

Based on his injuries, volunteers believe Phoenix had been dragged by the chains before being left to die in the park.

"I just don't understand that kind of sickness that makes anybody want to hurt any animal," animal rescue volunteer Gloria Huerta said.

Doctors believe it will take weeks for Phoenix’s wounds to heal and possibly months of therapy before he completely recovers and can be put up for adoption.

A GoFundMe page has been created to help pay for the dog's medical care.

A search was underway for the person responsible for the abuse and torture.
