The crash was reported about 2:30 p.m. when the tire came off a vehicle traveling north, on the other side of the highway, near Placerita Canyon Road.

The tire struck another vehicle, a dark-colored 2013 Hyundai, that was heading south. The driver of that car was killed, officials said. A white tarp was draped over the top of the car, aerial video from Sky5 showed.

A CHP officer said the driver killed was male, but had no other details on the motorist.

The car that lost a tire appeared to be a 1986 Cadillac. It was stopped on the right-hand shoulder several hundred feet up the freeway from where the Hyundai came to a halt.

The No. 1, 2, 3 and carpools lanes were temporarily closed, CHP officials tweeted.

Traffic was backed up in the area during the cleanup and investigation. Lanes reopened just after 5 p.m.
