Deputies arrested two vandalism suspects who struck one of them with a car before leading them on a pursuit on the 710 Freeway in the East Los Angeles area, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said Monday.

Officers responded to the 1400 block of Sydney Drive, near Whittier Boulevard,  around 2 a.m. after receiving several calls reporting suspects smashing multiple car windows in the area, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

When deputies arrived in their marked patrol car,  they stopped facing the two men who were inside a blue Volkswagen, the department said in a news release.

The suspects then drove towards the deputies and crashed into the vehicle’s driver side door as the deputies were getting out of the car, according to the department.

“The door struck a deputy and pinned him in the doorframe at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” the Sheriff’s Department said.

Nobody was hit by gunfire, and the suspects fled onto the northbound 710 Freeway, the Sheriff’s Department said. The officers gave chase until the suspects crashed on the freeway and were taken into custody, officials said.

The two suspects, both men in their 20s, were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the news release.

The deputy struck by the vehicle did not suffer any injuries that were life threatening but was taken to the hospital as a precaution, the Sheriffs Department said.

The agency released no further details about the incident.

Anyone with information was encouraged to call the department at 323-890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
