Prosecutors announced charges Tuesday against the South Los Angeles man accused of abusing his 4-year-old daughter, who died Sunday.
Charles Richard Lee, 23, faces one count of assault on a child causing death after being arrested on suspicion of abusing the child on Monday. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
He faces a possible maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison if convicted.
The girl was pronounced dead at L.A. County University of Southern California Medical Center, where hospital officials called police about her death just after 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.
She was taken for treatment after paramedics were called to a home and found her unresponsive, officials said. Later that day, detectives went to the girl’s home to speak with her parents and investigate.
According to prosecutors, the 4-year-old was dropped off at her father’s home several weeks earlier. Lee is accused of physically abusing his daughter at his home in 1500 block of East 42nd Street in the time since.
He was being held on $1 million bail before being charged.
The Los Angeles Police Department continues to investigate the case.
