Firefighters responded to a fire outside an auto yard in Wilmington Sunday afternoon, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Crews worked to extinguish the blaze at 1825 E. I Street at around 3:20 p.m., trying to stop the fire from spreading to nearby structures, LAFD said.

The auto parts yard was densely packed and it made firefighting efforts more challenging, authorities said.

More than an hour after the fire erupted, officials said firefighters were making progress but that the fire will take time to fully extinguish.

All visible flames has been extinguished by 6:45 p.m., but fire officials said they planned to remain on scene ensuring no flareups.

LAFD said the size of the fire was unknown, but thick gray plumes of smoke were visible from miles away.

No injuries were reported.

No further information was immediately available.
