When a dam collapsed in Baldwin Hills in 1963, devastating homes below, KTLA was the only local television news station with a helicopter. The KTLA “Telecopter” caught the disaster from above, as a gap in the concrete walls widened. Five people were killed and dozens of homes were destroyed, with many more damaged. Looting and related arrests followed. This archival footage aired during KTLA’s 35th anniversary special in 1982.
