Gerry Ruben, who worked as the executive producer of the KTLA News at 10 for decades, passed away Monday following a lengthy illness. He was 80 years old.

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Ruben started at KTLA in 1978.  Channel 5 became his home and ultimately the place where he would spend the rest of his career.

Ruben took over the reins at a time when technological breakthroughs allowed local television stations, not just networks, to cover major events on a global basis.

He guided News at 10  to many of its most highly rated and celebrated broadcasts. He also launched KTLA’s weekend news.

“He was a true pioneer in the television news business whose legacy is still felt today in the KTLA newsroom,” KTLA News Director Jason Ball said.
