A 59-year-old man was found dead Saturday evening after hang gliding from Kagel Mountain in the Sylmar area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim – later identified by the coroner’s office as Markus Schaedler – went hang gliding with four other people at Kagel Mountain Peak. He was reported missing around 6:20 p.m. when his companions realized that only four people from their group had made it to the ground, said sheriff’s Lt. Bill Jager.

The sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded with a helicopter and searched for the man. He was later found deceased in an area that was nearly impossible to access on the ground, according to Jager.

It was not immediately clear whether he was killed in the crash or if he had died of a health issue.

No further information was immediately available.
