An investigation was underway on Friday afternoon after possible human remains and animal parts were found at a strip mall in Compton, authorities said.

Homicide detectives initially responded to the 1500 block of North Long Beach Boulevard to investigate the discovery of possible human remains, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators were trying to determine if the remains were human, and if they were "legally possessed skeletal specimens," sheriff's officials said in a statement.

Earlier, a sheriff's deputy at the scene told KTLA that human remains and animal parts were uncovered at the scene.

No further information was immediately provided by authorities.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500.
