A 19-year-old Inglewood man has been arrested in the killing of up-and-coming rapper Kid Cali, who was shot during a party at a hillside home in Granada Hills last month.
Kenny Birdine was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, the Los Angeles Police Department announced Tuesday. He was taken into custody Saturday night, inmate records show.
Birdine has been charged with murder in the death of 30-year-old Justin Lishey, aka Kid Cali, according to LAPD. His bail was set at just over $3 million.
The killing was gang-motivated, LAPD said, adding that detectives did not plan to release any more information amid the ongoing investigation.
Lishey died after a shooting at a pool party in the back yard of a multimillion-dollar home on Longacre Avenue in Granada Hills on Aug. 20. Two others were injured.
The rapper had promoted the event — dubbed “Millions of Models: Mansion Pool Party” — on social media, and more than 100 people showed up, according to police.
The artist had been signed to Jaccpot Records, the record label owned by NFL wide receiver Desean Jackson. His death prompted messages of mourning from celebrities who knew him.
