A resident walking with a friend through Maywood was shot and killed by a man on a bike early Friday morning.

The shooting was reported just before 2:30 a.m. in the 5600 block of Everett Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim and his friend were walking down the street when a man rode up and started talking to him, Sheriff’s Department Lt. John Corina said.

At some point, an argument broke out between the two and the man on the bike pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times.

The victim, identified only as a 54-year-old Hispanic man from Maywood, was shot in the upper and lower body, Corina said. “He made it to the hospital, but they pronounced him dead at the hospital,” he said.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

“It doesn’t look like a robbery. Nothing seems to be missing from victim that we know of,” Corina said.

The gunman was described as a 25 to 35-year-old Hispanic man and possible gang member. He was last seen riding his bike northbound, Corina said.

The victim did not have any gang ties and it was unclear if he knew his killer, Corona said.

The victim’s friend, who fled immediately following the shooting, was being interviewed, Corina said.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Sheriff’s Department at 323-890-5500. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
