A surveillance camera captured a customer’s racially charged rant as he yelled at an employee over a sign that advertised a daily taco special in Spanish at a Mexican restaurant in Anaheim. The incident took place Monday at Palapas Tacos, which is located at 1101 W. Lincoln Ave. Juan Del Rio, the restaurant’s owner, told KTLA on Wednesday that he thinks the man became upset over a sign in front of his business that advertises the different daily specials. One of the daily specials is a Friday fish taco for $1.99. The unidentified customer tried to order the item on a different day and was surprised when he was charged more than that. “That’s bull—-! It says it in Mexican. We’re not in Mexico, we’re in America,” the customer can be heard saying in the video. “This is America. Not Spanish.” In addition to berating the cashier, he can also be seen and heard yelling at other customers in line. The man’s confusion may have stemmed over a set of different signs advertising the daily specials inside and outside the restaurant. Inside the business, the menu lists the specials in English and Spanish, while a sign outside has them only in Spanish. Apparently, that was what caused the man to become irate, according to Del Rio. “I was confused why this person is angry for that if they already explained what’s going on,” Del Rio said. “He was just not getting it.” The outside sign has been up since the restaurant opened a few years ago, and this was the first time Del Rio realized it wasn’t bilingual. The incident also marks the first time anyone has been upset over the fact that it is only in Spanish, he added. In addition to berating the cashier, the customer also later threatened to contact immigration officials, Del Rio said. He provided KTLA with cellphone footage of the encounter where the man, in his car, can clearly be heard saying he would call immigration on Del Rio. “Why?” the owner asked. “Because you’re not legal,” the man can be heard responding. Del Rio said he moved to Southern California from Mexico when he was 14 years old and is currently in the process of getting his U.S. citizenship. “It is upsetting that people think like that, you know, that way. Like, just because you’re Mexican, you’re illegal,” he said. “They don’t know the status of people just because you’re Mexican. They assume.”
