Two LAPD officers were taken to the hospital after a short pursuit ended in a violent two-car collision on a South Los Angeles residential street early Wednesday, authorities said.
Few details were available about the incident, which ended around 1:15 a.m. in the area of Main and 98th streets.
Based on preliminary information, investigators believed the pursuit vehicle either had been stolen or involved in an earlier incident, a Los Angeles Police Department official at the scene said.
Both cars sustained extensive damages in the wreck, video from the scene showed.
The pursuit vehicle appeared to have knocked over a traffic sign before it landed on the sidewalk next to a tree, according to the video. The front of the vehicle was facing the patrol car.
One of the officers suffered a broken wrist in the crash, while the other complained of general injuries, the official said. Both have been hospitalized for treatment, but were expected to be OK.
He added that the officers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The conditions of the driver and passenger in the pursuit vehicle were not immediately known.
No additional details about the pursuit, or the events that led up to it, have been released.
