A possible carjacking suspect opened fire on Long Beach police officers with an assault rifle and then led them on a chase Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

A man was being detained in connection with the shooting after he was found near the vehicle that fled, police said.

Neither the officers nor the shooter were struck during an exchange of gunfire, according to Sgt. Bradley Johnson of the Long Beach Police Department.

The incident began about 2:45 p.m. when officers on patrol ran the license plate of a vehicle near 63rd Street and Atlantic Avenue, funding that the vehicle was “wanted for an armed and dangerous carjacking” that had occurred earlier in the day in Buena Park, Johnson said in an email.

The officers pursued the vehicle and “eventually encountered the vehicle head on,” when the “suspect” fired multiple rounds through the car’s windshield at the patrol car.

Officers then followed the vehicle as it fled, but lost sight of it on the 91 Freeway, Johnson said.

A California Highway Patrol spokesperson had said the agency was assisting police with an incident at Cherry Avenue and the eastbound 91 Freeway, about 1 1/2 miles away from the site of the shootout.

The vehicle was later found in Bellflower, where an adult man located nearby was detained.

An assault rifle was recovered, Johnson said. He did not say where the weapon was found.

No other information was immediately available.
