Teen Boy Found Fatally Shot in Duarte

Deputies were searching for a gunman after a young man was fatally shot early Sunday in Duarte, officials said.

The shooting was reported about 1:40 a.m. in the 400 block of Shrode Avenue, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release. Duarte residents told KTLA they heard three gunshots in the area around that time.

The victim, whose name and age were not released by authorities, was described as a Hispanic juvenile. Sheriff's officials said he was shot at least once in the upper body.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends identified the deceased as 16-year-old Gabriel Carlos, who went by his middle name, Shea. They said he was killed near his grandmother's house.

Authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or released a description.

Miguel Gomez, who lives near the crime scene, told KTLA shootings have become more common in the area over the past eight years.

"It's unfortunate," he said.

No other information was immediately available.
