A 52-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into a home in Bakersfield and sexually assaulted two “very young” children Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Deputies were dispatched to the 10000 block of South Union Avenue about 1 p.m. to a report of someone trespassing, according to a news release from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, identified as Antonio Gardea Sr., was taken into custody as he attempted to flee the residence, the release stated.
Investigators later determined that Gardea allegedly broke into the house and sexually assaulted the young juveniles before their mother discovered him, the Sheriff’s Office said.
The suspect did not know the family, according to authorities.
Gardea was booked into the Kern County Jail on multiple felony charges, including oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child under the age of 10, lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old, indecent exposure and burglary, inmate records showed.
He was also accused of violating his probation. His bail was set $1,220,000, according to the release.
