Police are searching for a gunman who fatally shot a man on Father’s Day in Long Beach.
The incident was reported about 8:45 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Roswell Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department confirmed.
Arriving officers found the adult male victim inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to his upper body.
Officers rendered aid until the man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim was later identified in a police press release as 30-year-old Leevi Matuni Maseuli of Palmdale.
An employee at a nearby Arco station told KTLA that the person who was working overnight saw a child run into the gas station saying that his dad had been shot.
The 7-year-old boy was in the car during the shooting and though he was not hit by gunfire, he suffered “minor non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment,” police said.
“The child was released from the hospital shortly after the incident and was reunited with this mother,” the release added.
“To commit such a heinous crime in any circumstance is unacceptable, but to do so on Father’s Day in front of the victim’s child is even more disgraceful,” Police Chief Wally Hebeish said in the release. “This blatant disregard for our community will not go unanswered and our investigators are working diligently to identify anyone involved in the victim’s death. No child should ever have to endure an experience like this and I am asking the public to please speak up with any information, no matter how small, that could help us find those responsible for this callous act of violence.”
No description of the shooting suspect and no motive for the shooting were available.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detectives Michael Hubbard and Jesus Espinoza at 562-570-7244.
