An investigation was underway Friday following the fatal shooting of a man at a home near Compton, authorities said.

Deputies from the Compton station responded about 12:03 a.m. to a report of shots fired and a victim in the 14400 block of Loness Avenue (map), in an unincorporated area, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

They arrived to find a man, suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso, lying in the doorway of a home, the release said. No one else was found inside the residence.

The victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. His name was not released, pending notification of family.

No witnesses to the shooting were located, but a bystander told deputies that the victim lived at the home where he was found.

The 911 caller said “a vehicle was heard speeding away after the gunfire,” the sheriff’s statement said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can be made via Crime Stoppers: 800-222-8477.
