An investigation is underway after a man was found fatally shot on a sidewalk in East Hollywood early Saturday, officials said.
Officers responded to the scene around 12:20 a.m. after passersby came across a person down in the 800 block of North Mariposa Avenue, near Melrose and Normandie avenues, and called authorities, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police arrived to find a man with a gunshot wound, LAPD said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials described the victim as a man in his 40s and did not release his name, but Edwin Hernandez, who was at the scene with his father on Saturday morning, identified the victim as his dad's brother, 54-year-old Roberto Hernandez.
His uncle lived in the area and was a husband and a father of five, Hernandez told KTLA. The victim worked as a mechanic and was originally from El Salvador, where three of his kids remain, family members said.
"My dad’s face man. Heartbroken… Hopefully I can take care of my dad and heal his wounds somehow," Hernandez said. "I know it’s not gonna go away. I hope my uncle gets some justice."
Authorities have not released any information about a suspect. They provided no further details about the man's death.
Editor's note: Family members previously only referred to the victims' children living in the U.S. This post has been updated.
